Defending champions Pahang defeated Felda United 2-0 at the Selayang Stadium to top the Malaysia Cup Group A standings.
Pahang have nine points after four matches followed by Felda (7 points), Johor Darul Takzim II (4) and LionsXII (1).
Little seperated Pahang and Felda United at halftime.
Though there were chances at both ends, the custodians – Farizal Harun for Felda and Nasril Nourdin – were top notch avoid conceeding.
Pahang’s Azidan Sarudin saw his freekick go over in the second minute while Felda’s Zah Rahan Krangar saw a low shot pushed away in the 13th minute.
Two minutes later right winger R. Gopinanthan forced Farizal into a reflect save. Nigerian Dickson Nwakaeme had a glorious chance to put the visitors in the lead after Farizal spill Azamuddin Akil’s shot but Farizal recovered to prevent Nwakaeme at the half hour mark.
Edward Junior Wilson missed a sitter from a corner in the 59th minute after finding himself with acres of space from a corner.
Seven minutes later, Gopinathan was left with a simple tap in after Felda’s defence switched off during Azamuddin’s cross.
Azidan Sarudin forced Farizal to tip over a freekick for a corner in the 76th minute and referee Nagor Amir Noor Mohamed ingored calls for a penalty after Shukor Adan handled the ball from the resulting corner.
Fauzi Roslan was brought down in stoppage time for a penalty, which was converted by Nwakaeme.
