Defending champions Pahang have put themselves in a good position to qualify for the knockout stages after a 2-0 win over LionsXII at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Pahang have won both the matches in Group A thus far and face Felda United in Kuantan on Saturday for a hatrrick of wins.
The win in Singapore was sweet considering the Elephants suffered a 4-1 defeat the last time they travelled to the Republic.
Pahang led LionsXII 1-0 courtesy of a Dickson Nwakaeme goal in the 13th minute at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
However, it was the Singaporean development side that got things going first, only to be denied by the resilient Pahang defence marshalled by imports Zesh Rehman and Damion Stewart.
Hafiz Sujad almost stunned the visitors as early as the first minute but his cross-shot went just over. Faris Ramli and Sufian Anuar both had chances to take the lead less than 10 minutes into the match but was not able to guide the ball past Khairul Azhan Khalid.
Nwakaeme found the back of the net after the LionsXII defence could not deal with R. Gopinathan’s cross. The Nigerian forward picked up the ball and finished past Izwan Mahbud.
That did little to dampen the hosts’ spirit as they pushed for an equaliser until the break.
LionsXII continued pushing for an elusive goal but it was Pahang who doubled their lead after substitute Fauzi Roslan let loose a belter from the edge of the box in the 87th minute.
Faris Ramli made the most of a deflection of the linesman for a consolation goal in stoppage time.
