Defending champions Pahang were knocked out of the Malaysia Cup after losing 2-0 to Selangor in the semifinal second leg at the Shah Alam Stadium.
The result saw the Red Giants win 2-0 on aggregate and end Pahang’s dream of a third successive Malaysia Cup trophy.
The Elephants entered the dressing room at half-time needing a comeback after Guilherme de Paula’s 11th minute long range strike gave Selangor the lead.
Pahang must score in the second half to progress to their third successive final as the Red Giants lead the tie 1-0 on aggregate.
Pahang had three back-to-back chances in as many minutes but Selangor goalkeeper Norazlan Razali was at his best. First he pushed away a Hafiz Kamal free-kick just before Zesh Rehman was going to head it in the 16th minute. Then, he tips over Rehman’s floating header and saves a point blank attempt by Dickson Nwakaeme.
Hafiz squandered a chance five minutes to half-time as he scuffed a shot from inside the box after turning three Selangor players.
Selangor came out stronger in the first half and nine minutes into the second half 21-year-old Nazmi Faiz Mansor scored from long range to fly past Khairul Azhan’s left-hand top corner.
Zainal Abidin Hassan threw on wingers R. Gopinathan and D. Saarvindran but the duo could not penetrate Selangor’s tight defence.
