Zainal Abidin Hassan charges had a three goal cushion in the Malaysia Cup last eight after defeated LionsXII 4-1 at the Darul Makmur Stadium.
The Elephant took a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to a Hafiz Kamal freekick in the sixth minute.
The match took a nasty turn midway through the half as Abdul Aziz Ismail received a yellow for elbowing Safuwan Baharuddin in the 27th minute while Hafiz Sujad was booked for a foul on Dickson Nwakaeme in the 30th minute.
The Nigerian international had several chances in the match, including a solo effort which he shot wide in the 39th minute. Khairul Azhan Khalid twarted a Faris Ramli shot in the stoppage time to ensure the score stood into the break.
The host got their groove going in the second half with Matias Conti almost doubling the lead by heading Nwakaeme’s corner in the 52nd minute, only to be saved by Izwan Mahbud.
Two minutes later, the Argentine got in the scoresheet after finishing off Azamuddin Akil’s pass. Nwakaeme finally got one for himself with a placed shot well inside the box in the 58th minute while second half subsitute R. Gopinathan made it 4-0 in the 65th minute.
LionsXII got a consolation through Safuwan’s header in stoppage time.
